2008 Advocate of the Year Award

Now in its fourth year, the Small Business Advocate of the Year Award will be presented during the Washington Presentation Luncheon. The Advocate of the Year Award recognizes small-business owners who go above and beyond in advocating for the small-business community.

For the first time in 2008, this award will be made in honor of the late Lewis Shattuck, the pioneering small-business advocate and long-time president of the Smaller Business Association of New England.

NSBA will select five finalists and one winner to be recognized at the annual Small Business Advocate of the Year Award Luncheon on June 3, 2008, held in conjunction with the NSBA Washington Presentation in Washington, D.C.


Qualifications and Criteria:
The Advocate of the Year Award criteria and qualification include:

  • A candidate who has demonstrate da commitment to small business advocacy;
  • Proven history of volunteer activism on behalf of the small-business community; and
  • Success and growth as a small-business owner.

    Past Winners:
  • Scott Hauge, president of Cal Insurance & Associates and executive director of Small Business California, a grassroots organization with significant influence in California;
  • Robert Schmidt, founder of Cleveland Medical Devices Inc. and Orbital Research Inc., an active voice in state and national politics on taxation and commercialization; and
  • Valerie W. Perlowitz founder and CEO of Reliable Integration Services, Inc., a leader in technology issues serving on President George W. Bush’s IT Advisory Council.
