A letter drafted by U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Scott Brown (R-MA), and signed by 11 U.S. Senators, was sent to the Chairmen and Ranking Members of the House and Senate Small Business Committees on Friday urging them to come together and agree on legislation that would reauthorize the Small Business Innovation Program.  This letter came shortly after a similar letter in the House drafted by Reps Markey, Tsongas, and Welch, and signed by 25 US Representatives was sent to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Small Business Committee.

In the Senate letter, several concerns were laid out with regards to the proposed House SBIR Reauthorization bill, HR 1425.  The signers of the letter specifically identified sections 105, 106, 505, and 101 as potentially damaging to the SBIR program, and asked that they be omitted or changed in any upcoming compromise legislation.  The letter also underlined the importance of the SBIR program to innovation and job creation, and urged a speedy process to pass a long-term reauthorization.
