NSBA is urging every small-business owner to reach out to your elected officials in one of three ways:
- Invite your Representative and Senators to visit your business for a brief 30-minute talk and tour of your company.
- Attend a town hall meeting with your Representative and Senators, and take the opportunity to ask where he/she stands on a key small-business issue.
- Request a meeting with your Representative and Senators at their local office to discuss issues that matter to the small-business community near you.
Unfortunately, according to a recent NSBA Quick Poll, only 41 percent of respondents have attended a town hall meeting, and only 29 percent have invited their elected officials to visit their small business. Even fewer respondents to the Quick Poll—24 percent—plan to meet with their lawmakers during this August recess. Although NSBA’s lobbying efforts have resulted in some key pieces of legislation, there is nothing more influential than a Senator or Representative visiting a local business to gain a better understanding of how important small business is to the U.S. economy.
Due to the fact that so many lawmakers are up for reelection, coupled with the enhanced spotlight the presidential campaigns bring to the 2008 election, this August could be one of the best opportunities for you to talk with and influence your Senators and Representatives. NSBA has posted myriad issue briefs which you can download, print, and make available to your elected officials.
For the past 15 years, small business has created on average 93.5 percent of all net new jobs and comprised 99 percent of all employers, yet continues to be an afterthought for many lawmakers and candidates. This August is the perfect time to let your elected officials know what issues matter to you and the entire small-business community. We are 70 Million Strong…And Voting!
